This research is about David Fresco, the editor-in-chief of the Ladino newspaper El Tiempo, published in Constantinople in the years 1872-1930. When Zionism emerged as a political force, Fresco and his newspaper responded by declaring its loyalty to the Ottoman Empire. Fresco aligned himself with the Chief Rabbi Haim Nahum who took a position against the Zionists. This book is thus a study of David Fresco in the turbulent years of the Jewish Community of the early 19th century. It also includes a facsimile of David Fresco’s work Le Sionisme published in 1909 which is a compilation of his articles published in El Tiempo during this tumultous period and the subject of this study.
